William Cromarty.

The Cromarty Hall was donated to the people of South Ronaldsay in 1878 by local businessman and philanthropist William Cromarty (right). It has served as the community hall ever since and over the years has hosted innumerable dances, concerts, weddings, parties and pantomimes, as well as countless fund-raising events and even military funerals.

For many years it served as the local cinema and the original screen is still in place, in perfect condition, in the hall. The unique stage with it's proscenium arch and gallery, along with the balcony with its pew seating, were saved from demolition and fully integrated into the recent extension and refurbishment work.

Along side an endless number of local acts, many household names have graced the boards over the years, including Scott Skinner, Vera Lynn, Jimmy Shand, George Formby and Andy Stewart. With the hall's re-opening in 2006 it has continued to build its reputation as a fantastic concert venue and was recently described as "the most romantic venue in Orkney".
